Nuits-Saint-Georges

Nuits :
During prehistory, some people come to live in this area, just outside the actual town. This area is very marshy* (wet) because there is the river named “Meuzin” which flow off. Consequently the area is fertile and such a wet land that it is called “fertile mud”*. You have another word for that, it is “nubice”. Nuits comes from this word. You had lots of trees growing there, such as walnut trees*. Walnut* was first said “nux” in latin, an other possibility to explain “nuits”. Walnuts were associated to an old story, during Gallic period. In the near distance of Nuits-Saint-Georges, there is a waterfall. Many hundred years ago, Women came to the waterfall to know if they are going to have a baby. Wowen were used to put walnuts in boxes maid of glass. They put the boxes close to the waterfall, not coming back before one year. An year after, they came back to open wallnuts. If they were still good, women knew there would have a baby. Otherweise, they had to do it again.

Saint Georges :
Our St-Georges lived in 9th century. He was monk in Cordoue, in south of Spain. When he died in 858 some monks from Saint Germain des Prés abbey are send to bring rests of his body back from Spain to Paris. They do a stoppover somewhere in the near distance of Nuits-Saint-Georges, in Argilly. During their stop, they eat a lot, they drink a lot too... In the morning, they left Argilly and forget the remains. They arrived to the abbey empty-handed and they are sent back to our village to  collect the remains. But here, inhabitants had appropriated themselves the remains. A compromise has to be reached. The compromise is found : A miracle has to be certified : during the night of the passage of the procession,  somebody stoled the black horse of a woman, whose name is Pernotte, living alone in her farm. The thief run away across fields but suddently, he sees St-Georges. St-Georges explains him how bad it is that to stole something. The man is scared and he brings the horse back to the lady. After the certification of the miracle, a slot of vine take the name of “Saint Georges”. And Saint Georges became the protector against theft and illegal picking in vines.

It is only on 10th May 1892, that the town added “Saint Georges” to “Nuits”. At the arrival of railway, there were another “Nuits”. To distinguish the two towns, the company proposed to call the town “Nuits under Beaune”. But inhabitants preferred to add the name of the oldest slot of vine “Saint Georges”.
